Baby Dragon

This character is a baby dragon made for a short animated movie called : A Sweet Adventure, a film I worked on with other students in my third year of university.

I am very happy with the result and I think he is super cute!

What I did :

I did part of the design, the 3D modeling, the textures and some blend shapes

Steps

To start, I had some drawings of designs made by Marguerite Girard, another student who was part of the project. I also searched for inspiration online. I wanted to create a cartoonish and cute baby dragon that would fit with the other characters in the movie.

Inspirations

Modeling

I began to sculpt a base model in Zbrush

I then imported it in Maya to do more precise modeling and retopology

Finished Model

UVs

Once the modeling was fully finished, I made the UVs. The body span across 6 UDIM tiles.

Textures

Then I did the textures. The initial idea was for the dragon to be blue and gold, with gold-framed wings and red eyes. It didn't work out very well and the red eyes were deemed too scary for the character. I then opted for more pink, purple and blue hues.

Blend Shapes

I created a few blend shapes for the dragon : a smiling face, an angry face, an eye blink, brow movement, pupil contraction and pupil dilation
